How Much Wood Do You Need for Furniture?
Pro Estimating Tips
One of the most stressful parts of starting a new furniture project is the "Lumber Run." Buy too little, and you're making a second trip; buy too much, and you've wasted money. Here’s how to estimate your needs accurately.
General Project Estimates
While every design is unique, here are some "Rule of Thumb" board foot counts for common furniture items:
- Coffee Table: 15 - 25 Board Feet
- Dining Table (6-seater): 60 - 80 Board Feet
- End Table: 8 - 12 Board Feet
- Bookshelf (4ft tall): 30 - 45 Board Feet
The Estimating Method
To get a precise number, you should create a **Cut List**. List every part of your project (legs, aprons, top) and calculate the board feet for each part individually using our calculator.
Example for a Table Leg:
- Thickness: 2"
- Width: 2"
- Length: 2.5' (30 inches)
- Result: 0.83 BF (Order 1 BF per leg)
Don't Forget the "Hidden" Parts
Many builders forget to calculate for wood used in glue-ups, sacrificial blocks for clamping, or test pieces for setting up router bits. Always add an extra 5-10 board feet for these purposes.
