Lumber Pricing Guide: Understanding the Market
Updated April 2026
Walking into a sawmill without knowing current prices is a recipe for overspending. Lumber prices fluctuate based on availability, species, and grade. Here is what you need to know about pricing in the USA for 2026.
Hardwood vs. Softwood Pricing
Standard construction lumber (Pine, Fir, Spruce) is often sold at big-box stores by the piece. However, specialty hardwoods (Cherry, Walnut, Mahogany) are sold by the board foot at local sawmills.
Common Species Pricing (Approximate per BF)
| Species | Average Price (USD/BF) |
|---|---|
| Select Pine | $4.00 - $6.00 |
| White Oak | $8.00 - $12.00 |
| Black Walnut | $14.00 - $18.00 |
| Cherry | $6.00 - $9.00 |
Factors That Affect Price
- Grade: FAS (First and Seconds) is the highest grade and most expensive. Common #1 and #2 are cheaper but have more defects.
- Thickness: 8/4 (2" thick) lumber often costs more per board foot than 4/4 (1" thick) because it takes longer to dry.
- Width: Extra wide boards (12"+) often carry a premium "wide board" surcharge.
Money-Saving Tip
Look for "shorts" or "offcuts" at your local mill. These are pieces under 4 feet that can't be sold as standard stock but are perfect for small furniture projects and often sell for 50% less.
